Eight More Days...

It's been 89 days since I last saw my husband.  In that time, I've been a busy little bugger. Four of my books are going live in September, thanks to my MFA friends at Midnight Heat Books.  With so freaking much on my plate, I didn't want to deal with subbing and waiting for yet another thing to happen in my life. Midnight Heat Books is taking on a few writers of quality, (their words, not mine) before opening their doors to general submissions in January.  I feel lucky to know such great people and to finally get some ROI on that spendy 60K MFA.

Some unsolicited feedback I've heard is warning me to stay away from such a young company. They haven't officially launched yet, how can they take on writers? - is what I hear regularly. It's hard not too internalize all the naysayers. Yet, I know the people behind Midnight Heat Books - between the two of them, Veronica and Emma have six advanced degrees, two in Creative Writing and two in Publishing and Media Marketing. Veronica freelanced and interned for top lit agencies and Elizabeth is a Professor of English and Grammar. Could it not get any better for me?

The decision to leave the trenches of literary writing was easy with these two wonderfully talented and professional women beside me. I'm looking forward to showing off my work to my husband when he returns and exploring wherever that takes us. ;-)

PS - Haven't been to the gym in two weeks, but have managed to squeak out 8K words. Monday things get back on track.

No Really, #FastDraft is the E'ffing Bomb!

In 14 days, I've wracked up 35,000 words!

Tomorrow Revision Hell starts. My plan is to tackle edits on my Erotic Vacation series for a few days. I think the protocol is to edit in chunks. Since that one is only 20 pages, I can tackle revisions in a few days.  What I'm going to do with it after I finish is the real burning question. I've researched Selena Kitt's company eXcessica. Their doors were closed to submissions for awhile but now have reopened. She has a super far reach and a rock solid sales history. I also like her stance on censorship. My stuff isn't nearly as dripping wet as hers and other's who pub with  eXcessica. But if I'm really going to do this thing, I think I want to get behind an engine that roars.

12 5k's in a Year.
What a shit week for working out. I made it to the gym only twice.

Here's everything else I did in the last seven days: Girl Scouts, Soccer, Girl Scouts, Girl Scouts, Soccer, Girl Scouts, Swim Team, Birthday Party, an All Day Soccer Tournament with another Girl Scout event sandwiched in between my son's games, and what else?  Oh yeah, that's right, I wrote 17,500 new words!

OMFG! #FastDraft is Amaze-balls!

In a week, I wrote 17,500 words!

After day four, I redirected my focus to completing a hot little 10K word erotic story. It will eventually become part of a series, Erotic Vacations, a three to four story set that I hope to get out by September. I also worked on an Erotic Romance Paranormal Thriller - if there is such a thing.  It's a bit harder to nail down the words when there are two story threads, the romance and the thriller, but I'm plugging along.

12 5K's in a Year
I went to the gym four times last week. Two runs and two cycle classes. Thursdays seem to be the day I hit a wall and need a rest. I think I need to make that day a light cleaning day (750 calories in 3 hours!) and give my old lady muscles a breather. I'll try it out next week and see how it goes.

Fast Draft Day 1

I made the commitment of 10 pages a day. The class challenges you to write 20 pages, but I know myself. I know I'd ignore everything to get that kind of word count finished, including my kids. When you're the only parent they have for awhile, I couldn't do that to them. Ten pages leaves me enough time to be both Mom and Dad, while also writing, running, and losing my mind!

Word Count=3000 words. Feeling good since that is usually my word count for the week.

I made it to the gym four times last week. My mile is getting faster. I'm digging the cycle classes. I don't feel as lonely as I once did now that I'm getting out and socializing (and sweating) with others.

May is My Month

I am attacking the page for the entire month of May, and at the end of May, I'm going to do it all over again with Candace Haven's #FastDraft course.

Health and Happiness
Both of my kids need the school year to finish.  They are exhausted and tired and really looking forward to something new.

12 5K's in a Year
I'm doing a mile about 2x a week. I added cycling 2x a week too. I would like to add some strength. Maybe a 30 day challenge is in order?

Word Count
About 10,000 words in the last two weeks. I'm figuring out a story and vomiting some scenes as a result. I've been drawn to writing the moment when my H/h nearly destroy what they have and then writing backward from that point. This narrative point is called many things: crisis, moment of truth- the list really does go on forever. By writing these tense moments first, I find my characters hidden in all that raw emotion, the kind of emotion with a price tag so heavy that the cost of staying the same is too great. That popular meme says it all - "You don't really know someone until you see them deal with dial up internet," you don't know them until you see them truly tested with some seriously heavy shit. That's where I find my groove with my characters. I bring hailstorms of shit down upon them and write backward from that point, and tell the story of how they got into the mess in the first place.

Easter with my Cousin!

I haven't seen my cousin in 25 years. We reconnected via Facebook while I was overseas and now that I'm back in the States, we are back in touch.  She invited me and my kids down to her place in South Carolina. We had a blast, the kids all got along famously. I wrote squat and ran diddle.

I need a word count buddy. Anyone out there writing romance or erotic romance care to be my daily word count check in buddy?

12 5k's in a Year
I ran twice, stopping both times every 1/4 mile. Frustrating.

Farewell to My Husband, Again.

He left again and I felt a heavy sadness most of the night. The kids were a wreck and I had little patience left to help console them. We all went to bed early. I woke up in the middle of the night and started writing in my notebook. Reunited lovers and a betrayal that could tear them apart.  Spice level is at about a 3. For now.

Increased Word Counts - Big TIme!

I've let my imagination run amuck and its led me into some interesting places. Erotic Vacations, The Therapy Files: Confessions from the Couch, Tie Me Up/Tie Me Now, and Sex Tape are but a few.  I think it helps to have my hubby home for some real-time inspiration.

My husband has always traveled for his job and as a consequence, our relationship has taken its fair share if hits. Yet one benefit is that we live in a constant state of anticipation. After 15 years together, this work travel-lifestyle has kept the heat high, that's for sure. #winning

Hubby is Home!

My husband is home so I'll be taking a break from writing and posting. My kids are over the moon; they've missed their daddy to pieces, and so has mommy.

My reading list this week:
Deeper, Megan Hart
In Mid Air, Kim Wright

How Hot is Too Hot?

Ok, I've read some seriously hot stuff this week. How far can it go?  I've heard about one handed writers, (get it, with one hand?), but are there one handed readers out there? Inquiring minds want to know!

Writing Sex Scenes

In the last two weeks I've read the following titles:

Take it Like a Vamp, Candace Havens
Short Steamy Sampler, K Matthew and Sky Corgan (Same author, I think)
One Fiery Night, Em Petrova
One Weekend Only, Christie Butler
Touched by a Demon, Ruby Winchester
Party Favors, Aubrey Watt
In the Barn, Selena Kitt
Connections, Selena Kitt
A Twisted Bard's Tale, Selena Kitt

My biggest question after digesting all that heat is this: How do they write these steamy sex scenes?

In my erotic writing, I plug along, easily getting my characters to take their clothes off, but choke when the real heat starts. Embarrassment, a frigid internal editor, I have no idea what's the problem. The transference from watching sex to writing it can be jarring, I know this.  To help me get over this hump, (punny, I know), I downloaded Be a Sex-Writing Strumpet by Stacia Kane. (I think she is also December Quinn?) A lot I already knew. As with any kind of fiction writing, a good sex scene should do the following:

1) Show something about the characters.
2) Show how the characters interact and the nature of their relationship.
3) Advance the  story
4*) Arouse the reader

Ok, #4* stumped me. Not all readers are alike. What arouses one, may turn off another.  This hiccup I recognized as the anxiety a lot of writer have over their audience. We want to please all of them but in doing so, we lose the story within us.  My solution, at least my solution right now, is to let the story flow naturally, uncover it as Stephen King says (On Writing) and until my characters achieve their happy ending (happy ending, get it?)

A New Direction

I'm putting all my YA and MG writing on a shelf, and writing romance full time now.  I think I might be writing Erotic Romance. My plan for the next week is to read some titles and compare my work.

February, still fuck you.

Happy Birthday to my Husband!

Today is my husband's 41st birthday.  The kids and I spoke to him on Skype, the first time in a few weeks, and we all had a good time "visiting" in person.

Health and Happiness
We all are much happier now that we saw the big cheese live on Skype.

12 5K's in a Year
Don't ask. It's pathetic. Just pathetic.

Word counts
Something interesting is happening. I've steered way off course in my writing. I think I'm writing romance. I think I'm writing steamy romance. And I think I really like it.

Hello, Feburary

Guess what? More snow! That's not excitement. It's total disgust.

Happiness and Health
The snow and yawning stretches inside is wearing on us all.

12 5K's in a Year
Meh

Word Counts
I wrote about 1,000 words of vomit. I started with two names and hammered at the keys for about a hours. I have no idea what I'm doing or where it's all going. For right now, I'm enjoying the ride.

Post MFA Residency Blues

Goals Update:

Happiness and Health
Child #2 is sick with some nastiness. She's running a 102.5 fever. We're off to the pediatricians tomorrow.  Child #1 is hating all things common core.

12 5k's in a Year
Missed two weeks because of my trip. I should be at week 3 but restated the program back to week 1.

NYE and Graduation

Happy New Year!

How did I spend my NYE without my honeybun at home? I took my two monkeys to see Frozen and had dinner at Noodles and Company. Everyone was in bed by 10pm.

Goals Update:
Happiness and Health
Kids are healthy and relatively happy without Daddy.

12 5k's in a Year
Week 1 Couch to 5k complete

Word Counts
I wrote about 5,000 words of my MG novel that  I've been trying to finish since I started grad school. For reasons unknown to me, trying to finish this story feels like I'm peeling skin from bones. I need to rethink my direction.

I'm on my way to my MFA graduation. Wish me luck!

Snow Days=still 2 but that might change tomorrow!!
